Abstract To protect navigation safety and marine ecological environment in the midandfar South China Sea and safeguard national maritime interests, China needs to build search and rescue bases on islands and reefs in the South China Sea, which has legal, cognitive, material and practical foundations. However, China faces complicated and sensitive geopolitical challenges and severe natural conditions to fulfill this mission. Therefore, it is advisable for China to adopt a comprehensive plan and scientific layout. In other words, China should take a rational approach regarding what types of search and rescue bases to build on the Xisha and Nansha reefs where the infrastructure and geographical location are better. In the meanwhile, China should improve relevant supporting facilities and reduce external risks with all means in order to create a better environment for the construction and operation of the search and rescue bases.
