Abstract Defense diplomacy means the diplomatic policy and actions taken by officials and think tanks affiliated to the Ministry of Defense, to enhance military and security trust and confidence between countries. It is very important for civilian officers to promote regional peace and stability by discussing and resolving hot issues of common concerns. In recent years, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), establishing a series of multi-track defense exchange and communication mechanisms, has made rapid progress in defense diplomacy, which promoted the construction of its political and security community, and made important contributions to the establishment of ASEAN’s centrality in the regional security cooperation framework. Although China and ASEAN as well as
its member states have made positive progress in building bilateral and multilateral defense diplomacy, they are also confronted with some serious challenges. They need to strengthen coordination in the process of shaping common policy norms, making consistent agendas and selecting proper topics, so that the solid foundation of the China-ASEAN community with a shared future could be constructed.
